Peace suddenly became an exiguous luxury in my
area during the campaign period of the 2015 elections, it was hard to come by, even when you are in your abode.
The political touts in my area increasingly became a nuisance one would wake up to daily, chanting "sai Baba" and singing PMB's praise all day long. With a high speed, they'd ride bikes on the streets chanting "chanji dole, sai baba", while holding campaign posters.
Businessmen, especially those that work with laptops and sell phone accessories were not left out, they would play Baba Buhari's campaign songs in volumes that are rather earsplitting and outrageously disturbing. Have you ever heard music in a volume so high that it makes your heart pound to its rhythm? Thats exactly what I regularly passed through in that period.
This continuous experience made the lyrics of these songs to forcefully register themselves in my memory, i can particularly remember " Nigeria sai baba Buhari, gaskiya dokin karfe, a gaya masu ko basu so......" It was an experience.
I can vividly recall a certain day when my childhood Friend Iliyasu came to issue me a mild "threat", or let me just say an advice. The election day was very close then.
" Guy, hope say you ready to flee if Buhari loses", he told me in his stentorian tone. "....Because area go scatter if him lose o, cos we don ready", he continued. At this point my heart was pounding, but i tried my best to disguise my true feelings by feigning a smile. I later began to wonder what he meant by " we are ready!". Who are "we"?
Eventually, the day of the election came and passed. The voters' turn up was huge and unprecedented,it was relatively a success and the candidate i prayed for, won. I prayed for him to win because i was not ready to face whatever it is Iliyasu warned me about earlier, his scary demeanor that day alone betokened something bad.
PMB's victory made the situation worse, it was heavily celebrated in the whole town. Loud music and shouts emanated from all angles of the town, it was becoming increasingly unbearable, but what could one do? The celebration lingered for weeks.
However, today, my area that was once a den of cacophonous chaos and unending political rallies has suddenly become hushed. Its somewhat strange how all those touts suddenly disappeared and no one seems to find pleasure in playing or singing PMB's praise any longer.
Iliyasu came by and i engaged him in a conversation:
"Guy, why people no dey talk about PMB like before na?"
"See, no dey mention that name again, in short him fada there", he replied angrily.
"See as town dry, guys no even see money buy food chop talk more of spend".
At this point, i realised that hunger had played a major role in hushing my once noisy area down.
I'm proud of my president already, because he promised to "change" things around the country and i have experienced that magnificently in my area. I'm expecting more.
